The relaxed traffic at 8 a.m., the people jogging at 9 or even 10 a.m. (when do these people go to work, anyway?!) and that fresh-cool-salty breeze blowing day and night are just some of the things that you would probably expect to find in a small fisherman’s village rather than in a metropolis with 3 million people, like Lisbon.
The capital of Portugal is really cool and tranquil compared to other capital cities around the world and this is only the first pleasant surprise Lisbon has for you if you visit it for the first time. Belém Tower
Located on the north bank of Tagus (Tejo) River in Lisbon, western Portugal, the Belém Tower (Torre de Belém) dates from the early 16th century, and was designed as a part of the city’s defense system.
The tower was built in Manueline architectural style – common to many other monuments and old buildings in Lisbon – using lioz limestone (a rock specific to the surroundings of the city) and, despite its age, it is very well preserved – thus the UNESCO World Heritage Site title received in 1983 along with the Jerónimos Monastery. The ancient Italian city of Genoa is located in the north part of the country, enjoying a warm Mediterranean climate. Although its glory days during the Middle Ages and Renaissance era are long gone, the city that is home for over 600,000 inhabitants still hosts numerous museums and monuments, cultural and historical sites (the vast majority of them dating many hundreds of years back) and was named European Cultural Capital in 2004.
