Are you trying to figure out where you want to jet off to this summer? Well, have you thought about taking a trip to Crete? This beautiful Greek island is one of the largest in the Mediterranean and offers warm weather, lovely beaches, scrumptious food, sparkling seas and ancient history sites to visit. Crete is one of the most modern Greek islands and has so much to offer travellers of all different tastes. Here, we are taking you through the many different reasons why you will want to head out and explore this island for yourself this summer.
What many people absolutely love about Crete is that it offers the perfect mix of sun, sand, sea and history. Don’t get us wrong, we absolutely love sitting sunning ourselves next to the pool, but it is great to mix things up a little and venture out to find out more about the history of where you are. Most of us will be familiar with the legend of the Minotaur, the monster locked away under the Mino’s castle, who was the King of Crete. Legend says that the son of the King of Athens sailed to Crete to kill the monster and successfully escaped. This story took place in Knossos, the oldest city in Europe, and tourists can go and visit this wonderful city today! It was the Minoan capital from around 2000BC and it won’t take you long to get there from Heraklion, the biggest city in Crete. If you love to immerse yourself in history, then make sure you don’t miss out on a visit to the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion where you can learn lots more about the island’s rich history.
After a day of exploring in Crete, we are sure all you will want to do is relax on one of its beautiful beaches and luckily for you there are plenty of them to choose from. While this island has lots of dramatic mountains and cliffs, it also offers crystal clear waters. We would recommend checking out beaches such as Elafonisi, Balos and the black sand beach at Agia Roumeli.
Stay in a Gorgeous Villa
When staying in Crete, many people tend to opt to stay in a stunning villa. There are plenty of Crete villas to choose from and you will be blown away by the luxury that they offer. An option are villas provided by BlueVillas especially if you are going in a group as you can experience the island in all its splendour at a pace that suits you.
Enjoy the privacy and your own private pool! We would also recommend hiring a car so you can further explore the beaches and archaeological sites located across the island.
Another highlight of visiting Crete is all of the delicious cuisine that is available to you. Head on out to the local restaurants to enjoy amazing flavours, local ingredients and a brilliant atmosphere. Crete is also famed around the world for its high-quality olive oil and so you can expect to find plenty of it used in the restaurants here.
Make sure you leave some room in your suitcase to take a bottle home with you! If wine is your thing, then Crete has plenty to offer. This island has had a wine tradition dating back over 4000 years and is perfect to enjoy with your meals. With so much local and fresh food, you can enjoy unique tradition influenced by the many different cultures that have landed on this island throughout the years.
When visiting Crete, we would recommend that you try out the local salad Dakos which is filled with Cretan mizithra cheese, fresh tomatoes and drizzled with their famous olive oil.
What we love about Crete is how diverse it is. While you can spend one day visiting the beach, the following day you can be immersed in the island’s natural landscape along the northern coast and in central Crete. For a lot of the year, these mountains are capped in snow and really are breath-taking to look at. While you are in Crete, we would recommend that you take a trip to one of their deep gorges as these are great for walking and exploring the dramatic landscapes. Samaria Gorge is the longest gorge in Europe and it is must-do when visiting the island.
It was created with a river that runs from the White Mountains down towards the sea. Take a hike along the river and you will truly have an unforgettable experience!
